Life Questions

WHAT IS LIFE ABOUT?

Does God Exist?

People have asked the question for thousands of years. What reasons might we have for believing there is more behind the universe than the universe itself?

Does God exist?

For some people, the answer seems obvious. For others, belief in God feels difficult or even unnecessary. Many of us probably find ourselves somewhere between those two positions.

We may believe and still have questions. We may doubt and still wonder. We may not be sure what we believe at all.

Perhaps a good place to begin is not by forcing ourselves toward certainty, but by asking whether belief in God is a possibility worth seriously considering.

Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?

The universe exists.

That statement sounds almost too obvious to mention. Yet underneath it is a remarkable question: Why is there anything at all?

We can investigate how the universe developed and learn an enormous amount about its history and physical processes. But another question remains: Why does a universe capable of developing in this way exist in the first place?

Some people conclude that existence simply needs no further explanation. Others wonder whether the universe points beyond itself toward a source of reality that does not depend upon the universe for its own existence.

That does not settle the question of God. But it gives us a reason to ask it.

Science asks:
How does the universe work?

Philosophy asks:
Why is there something rather than nothing?

Faith asks:
Could there be Someone behind it all?

The World We Find Ourselves In

The universe is not only here. It is remarkably ordered.

It operates in ways that can be studied mathematically. Life has emerged within it. Human beings have consciousness, reason, creativity, moral awareness, and the ability to ask questions about the universe that produced us.

None of those observations automatically proves the existence of God. There are different ways of understanding them.

But taken together, they raise an interesting possibility: perhaps reality is not merely something that exists. Perhaps there is meaning behind it.

What About Our Experience of Being Human?

Questions about God do not arise only when we look at stars or think about the beginning of the universe.

They also emerge from ordinary human experience.

Why do we experience some things as truly right or wrong rather than merely convenient or inconvenient? Why can beauty move us? Why do love, sacrifice, justice, and meaning seem to matter so much? Why have people across cultures and centuries reached beyond themselves toward something greater?

There are natural explanations for many aspects of human experience, and exploring those explanations is worthwhile. But we can still ask whether they tell the whole story.

A Question You Do Not Have to Rush

Belief in God is too important a question to accept simply because someone tells us to believe. It is also too important to dismiss without considering it.

You do not have to settle the question today.

Perhaps the next step is simply to remain open: to pay attention to the world, to your own experience, and to the questions that continue to surface.

And if there is a God, another question naturally follows: What might this God actually be like?
