How Do I Start Reading the Bible?

If you have recently begun following Jesus, someone may have encouraged you to start reading the Bible. But when you open it, you might wonder where to begin.

The Bible is a large collection of books written over many centuries. Some parts tell stories. Others contain poetry, wisdom, prophecy, letters, and teaching. It can feel overwhelming when you are just getting started.

The good news is that you do not have to understand everything at once. Reading the Bible is part of learning to know Jesus and discovering the life God invites you to receive from Him.

The Bible Tells One Great Story

Although the Bible contains many different books, they belong to one larger story.

It begins with God creating humanity to live in relationship with Him and receive life from Him. But human beings chose to seek life on their own, turning away from the One who is the source of life.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see God working through people, promises, and events to carry forward His purpose of restoring His creation.

That story reaches its center in Jesus.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus opens the way for us to receive life with God again. The New Testament tells us about Jesus, the beginnings of His Church, and the life He invites His followers to live.

“You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me.”

John 5:39

Jesus reminds us that Scripture ultimately points us toward Him.

The Bible is one unified story centered on Jesus.

Begin by Getting to Know Jesus

A wonderful place to begin reading the Bible is one of the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

These books tell us about the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

I would suggest beginning with the Gospel of John. John helps us see who Jesus is, why He came, and what it means to receive life through Him.

You do not need to read several chapters every day. Begin with a short passage. Sometimes a few verses are enough.

As you read, pay attention to what Jesus says, what He does, how He treats people, and what His words reveal about the Father.

The goal is not simply to gather information about Jesus. It is to grow in your relationship with Him.

Read Slowly and Ask Simple Questions

You do not need to become a Bible scholar before Scripture can begin shaping your life.

One helpful approach is to read a short passage slowly and consider three simple questions.

What does this passage tell me about Jesus or the character of God?

Look for what the passage reveals about God’s love, faithfulness, wisdom, holiness, or purposes.

What am I noticing as I read?

Perhaps a word stands out. Maybe something encourages you or raises a question. You do not need to force an answer.

How might I respond to God?

You might thank Him, ask for help, confess something, or simply carry a thought with you throughout the day.

These questions can help Scripture become more than something you read. They invite you to engage with God as you read.

It Is Okay When You Do Not Understand

Some passages will be easy to understand. Others may seem confusing or unfamiliar.

Remember that the Bible was written in different historical settings and contains different kinds of writing. Understanding those things takes time.

When something is difficult, you can make a note of your question, ask another Christian, or return to the passage later.

You do not need to invent an answer or assume every verse is a direct instruction about your personal life. First consider what the passage is saying in its own context.

Over time, as you become familiar with the larger biblical story, individual passages will begin to make more sense.

Let Scripture Become Part of Everyday Life

Reading the Bible is not meant to be another religious task you must complete to keep God pleased with you.

God has already welcomed you through Jesus. Scripture helps you learn to live in the relationship you have received.

You might choose a regular time each day to read. Perhaps in the morning, during a lunch break, or before bed.

If you miss a day, you do not need to feel guilty or start over. Simply return to reading when you can.

As you continue, you may discover that a passage stays with you throughout the day, shaping how you think, pray, and respond to the people around you.

That is part of how the Holy Spirit uses Scripture to form the life of Jesus within us.

Begin With John Chapter 1

Find the Gospel of John in your Bible or Bible app. Begin by reading John 1:1–18.

Read the passage slowly. Notice what John says about Jesus, the Word, and the life and light He brings.

Ask yourself:

What am I discovering about Jesus?

What stands out to me?

How might I respond to God today?

You might finish with this prayer:

“Father, thank You for giving us the Scriptures. As I read, help me come to know Jesus more deeply. Give me understanding where I need it, patience when I have questions, and a heart that is open to the life You are forming within me.”
