What Just Happened When I Trusted Jesus?

Deciding to follow Jesus can be a meaningful moment, but it can also leave you with questions. What exactly happened? Did God really receive me? Am I supposed to feel different? What happens now?

You do not need to understand everything that happened in order for your relationship with Jesus to be real. Following Jesus begins with receiving what God has done for you and learning, one day at a time, to live the life you have received from Him.

God Moved Toward You First

Your new life with Jesus did not begin because you finally became good enough for God. It began with God’s grace.

Grace means that God gives us what we could never earn for ourselves. He moved toward us in Jesus before we could ever make our way toward Him.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.”

Ephesians 2:8

That means your relationship with God does not rest on how well you perform today, tomorrow, or next week. It begins with what God has already done for you through Jesus.

You Trusted Jesus

Trusting Jesus is more than agreeing that certain things about Him are true. It is placing yourself in His hands.

You are beginning to say, “Jesus, I am no longer depending on myself to make my life right with God. I am trusting You and what You have done for me.”

You may still have questions. You may still have doubts. You certainly still have things to learn. Trust does not require having everything figured out. It means you have begun placing your confidence in Jesus and choosing to follow Him.

You Received Life

Jesus did not come simply to make people more religious. He came to give life.

“I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.”

John 10:10

This is one of the most important things to understand as you begin following Jesus:

You do not spend the rest of your Christian life trying to convince God to accept you. You begin from the life, love, forgiveness, and relationship He has already offered you in Jesus.

The Christian life is learning to live from what you have received.

You Have Begun a Relationship

Following Jesus is not merely a decision you made once. It is the beginning of a relationship.

You will learn to talk with God. You will begin discovering the Scriptures. You will learn about the Holy Spirit. You will grow alongside other followers of Jesus. You will discover places where God wants to change you, heal you, and teach you a different way to live.

None of that happens all at once.

Right now, you do not need to know everything about Christianity. You simply need to begin learning to live with Jesus and take the next step He places before you.
