Who Is the Holy Spirit?

As you begin following Jesus, you will probably hear Christians talking about the Holy Spirit. You may wonder who the Holy Spirit is, what He does, and how you can know whether He is working in your life.

Perhaps you have heard people describe powerful spiritual experiences. Or maybe you have heard someone talk about being guided by the Spirit, filled with the Spirit, or receiving spiritual gifts. All of that can seem unfamiliar when you are just beginning your journey with Jesus.

The most important thing to understand is that the Holy Spirit is not simply a feeling, a force, or a special experience. He is God present with us, helping us know Jesus and learning to live the life we have received from Him.

The Holy Spirit Is God With Us

Christians believe in one God who has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We call this the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit is not a lesser part of God or merely a power that God sends into the world. He is fully God, personally present and active in our lives.

Before Jesus went to the cross, He told His disciples that He would not leave them alone. He promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to be with them.

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”

John 14:16–17

Jesus was preparing His followers for a new way of experiencing God’s presence. Through the Holy Spirit, God would be with them and dwell within them.

That same promise is part of the new life we receive through Jesus.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Know Jesus

One of the most important things the Holy Spirit does is help us know Jesus more deeply.

The Spirit does not draw attention away from Jesus. He helps us understand who Jesus is, remember His teaching, and learn to trust Him.

As you read Scripture, the Holy Spirit helps you grow in understanding. As you pray, He helps you turn your heart toward the Father. As you face difficult decisions, He helps you grow in wisdom and discernment.

Sometimes you may become aware of something that needs to change in your life. At other times, you may be reminded of God’s love, encouraged to forgive someone, or prompted to reach out to a person who needs care.

These ordinary moments can be part of the Spirit’s work as He forms the life of Jesus within you.

The Holy Spirit Begins Changing Us

When we begin following Jesus, we do not immediately become everything God intends us to be.

We still have old habits, unhealthy ways of thinking, and places in our lives where we need to grow.

The good news is that we are not left to change ourselves through willpower alone.

The Holy Spirit works within us, gradually forming the character of Jesus in our everyday lives.

The apostle Paul describes some of the qualities that grow as we learn to live by the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Galatians 5:22–23

Notice that Paul calls these qualities fruit. Fruit grows as something receives the life it needs.

In the same way, Christian growth is not simply a matter of trying harder to become a better person. It is learning to depend on the Holy Spirit as He forms Christ within us.

The Holy Spirit forms the life of Jesus within us as we learn to depend on Him.

The Holy Spirit Gives Gifts for Serving Others

The Bible also teaches that the Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to followers of Jesus.

These gifts are ways the Spirit works through God’s people to encourage, strengthen, and serve others.

Some gifts may be expressed through teaching, encouragement, service, generosity, leadership, or mercy. The New Testament also describes gifts such as healing, prophecy, and other expressions of the Spirit’s power.

You do not need to understand every spiritual gift right now. And you do not need to compare your experience with someone else’s.

The gifts of the Spirit are not trophies that prove someone is especially spiritual. They are gifts of grace given for the good of others.

As you grow in your relationship with Jesus and become part of a church community, you will have opportunities to learn more about how the Spirit works through you.

Learning to Recognize the Spirit’s Leading

You may wonder how to recognize when the Holy Spirit is guiding you.

Sometimes you may sense an encouragement, a conviction, or an invitation to take a particular step.

But not every thought or feeling is necessarily from the Holy Spirit. That is why learning to recognize His leading takes time and wisdom.

Scripture helps us understand the character and purposes of God. Prayer helps us become attentive to Him. Other mature Christians can help us discern wisely.

We should never feel pressured to claim that God has spoken when we are uncertain.

Sometimes the Spirit’s work is very quiet. You may simply find yourself becoming more patient, more willing to forgive, or more aware of someone who needs your kindness.

These things matter. The Spirit is at work not only in extraordinary moments, but throughout our ordinary lives.

You Can Depend on the Holy Spirit Every Day

Following Jesus is not something we accomplish through our own strength.

Each day, we are invited to receive the life God gives and learn to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

You can ask the Spirit to help you understand Scripture, love another person, recognize sin, resist temptation, or respond wisely to a difficult situation.

And when you do not feel anything unusual, you can still trust that God is faithfully at work in you.

Your relationship with the Holy Spirit is not measured by the intensity of your experiences.

It grows as you continue learning to trust and depend on God.

Welcome the Spirit’s Work Today

Take a few quiet moments today to remember that God is present with you. You do not need to create a particular feeling or experience.

Think about one situation you are facing. Perhaps you need patience, wisdom, courage, forgiveness, or the ability to love someone well.

You might pray:

“Father, thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, help me know Jesus more deeply and learn to live in the life He has given me. Form His character within me. Give me wisdom for today, and help me recognize how You are inviting me to respond.”
