Kingdom Wisdom Part 8 Devotionals
Day 1: Let Jesus Take You Deeper
Devotional
Matthew 7 comes near the end of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus has been placing meaningful choices before His listeners: two gates, two roads, two destinations, and two kinds of fruit. In Matthew 7:21–23, He takes the conversation deeper. It is possible to appear religious, say the right things, and even do impressive things while missing the life found in relationship with Him.
This warning is not meant to keep sincere people trapped in fear. Jesus is inviting us to move beyond surface-level faith into a real, growing relationship with Him. He does not merely call us to know information about Him; He calls us to know Him, receive His life, and live under His loving reign.
Bible Verse
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 7:21
Reflection Question
Is my relationship with Jesus mainly shaped by what I do for Him, or am I learning to live closely with Him?
Quote
“We can’t leave it on the surface. That’s not where we find life.”
Prayer
Jesus, take me deeper than surface-level faith. Help me to know You personally, trust You fully, and receive the life You offer. Amen.
Day 2: Knowing the Lord, Not Just the Language
Devotional
Calling Jesus “Lord” is important, but Jesus warns that the right words alone are not the same as a life surrendered to Him. We can know Bible verses, worship songs, familiar phrases, and the expected answers to spiritual questions. Those things can be good gifts, but they cannot replace knowing Jesus.
Faith becomes personal as we learn to live with Jesus as Lord. That means bringing our real lives to Him: our decisions, fears, relationships, failures, hopes, and ordinary days. He is not looking for polished religious language. He desires relationship with people who come honestly, listen for Him, and follow Him.
Bible Verse
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 7:21
Reflection Question
Where might I be relying on familiar faith language instead of spending genuine time with Jesus?
Quote
“Knowing the language of our faith is not the same as knowing the Lord of our faith.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I do not want to settle for merely knowing about You. Teach me to know You more deeply and to let Your love and grace shape my life. Amen.
Day 3: Activity Cannot Replace Intimacy
Devotional
The people Jesus describes in Matthew 7 point to remarkable works done in His name: prophecy, deliverance, and miracles. Yet their spiritual activity did not establish the relationship they claimed. Jesus challenges the assumption that visible gifting, influence, success, or busyness automatically shows spiritual maturity.
The power is in the name of Jesus, not in human accomplishment. Paul makes a similar point in 1 Corinthians 13: without love, even extraordinary gifts, knowledge, faith, and sacrifice gain nothing. The Christian life is not ultimately measured by how impressive we appear. It is about Christ’s life being formed within us.
Serving Jesus is good, but serving must flow from being with Jesus. When activity takes the place of intimacy, we can become busy while missing the best thing: life with Him.
Bible Verse
“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” — 1 Corinthians 13:2
Reflection Question
Am I measuring my spiritual life mainly by activity and accomplishment, or by a growing relationship with Jesus?
Quote
“There’s nothing like being with Jesus. That’s at the heart of all of this.”
Prayer
Jesus, protect me from substituting activity for intimacy with You. Let everything I do flow from Your love and from time spent in Your presence. Amen.
Day 4: Receive Life by Remaining in Christ
Devotional
When Jesus speaks about doing the Father’s will, it can be tempting to think we need to work harder, become busier, or become more religious. But Jesus describes the Father’s will in relational terms: looking to the Son and believing in Him. Obedience matters deeply, but it belongs in the right order. It is the expression of relationship, not an attempt to earn one.
Jesus uses the picture of a vine and branches to show us where fruitful life comes from. A branch does not produce life independently. It remains connected to the vine and receives life from it. In the same way, we do not create Kingdom life through striving and then offer it to Jesus. We remain in Him, and His life produces fruit through us.
Bible Verse
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” — John 15:4
Reflection Question
What would it look like today for me to remain in Jesus rather than trying to produce life on my own?
Quote
“We don’t produce kingdom life independently and then somehow try to present it to Jesus; we receive His life.”
Prayer
Father, help me to receive Your Son, trust Him, and remain in Him. Let love, patience, grace, humility, and trust grow in me through Your life at work in me. Amen.
Day 5: Life Is Received, Not Achieved
Devotional
The sobering words of Matthew 7:23 are not about people who sincerely struggle, fail, repent, and keep returning to Jesus. They expose the danger of claiming Jesus’ name while living apart from His authority. The people in the passage point to what they accomplished, but Jesus says, “I never knew you.”
Eternal life is described by Jesus in relational terms: knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. The good news is that Jesus has already opened the way. Through the cross and resurrection, He has done everything needed on His side for relationship with us. He invites us to say yes to Him, trust Him, spend time with Him, and do the next right thing He puts before us.
There are two approaches before us: “Lord, look at everything I have done,” or “Lord, apart from You I can do nothing.” The way of life is not self-achievement. It is receiving life from God.
Bible Verse
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” — John 17:3
Reflection Question
What is one practical way I can say yes to Jesus today by talking with Him, listening for Him, reading Scripture, or doing the next right thing?
Quote
“Life is received not achieved.”
Prayer
Jesus, I do not just want to do things, even good things. I want to know You and live from Your life. I say yes to You again today. Teach me to abide in You and follow You. Amen.
