Kingdom Wisdom Part 9
Whose Voice Are You Listening To?
We are in a series called Kingdom Wisdom, looking at the wisdom Jesus gives us for living in the Kingdom of God. Last week we talked about our relationship with Jesus and discovered that Kingdom life isn’t simply doing things for Jesus. It is knowing Him and learning to live from His life.
This week, Jesus invites us to consider another important part of that relationship. Listening.
Before Jesus talks about building, before He talks about foundations, and before He talks about storms, He talks about hearing.
And I think that’s important because every day we are listening to voices that are shaping how we see the world.
Think about how many voices compete for our attention. The news. Social media. Advertisements. Friends. Family. Coworkers. Popular culture. And perhaps one of the loudest voices of all: our own thoughts.
Every day we receive messages about what matters. What success looks like. What will make us happy. What we should fear. What we should pursue. What will give us security and significance.
And those messages shape us, often without our even realizing it.
Have you ever noticed how something someone said to you years ago can still affect how you think about yourself? Maybe it was encouragement. Someone believed in you, and their words helped shape your life. Or maybe it was criticism. Something hurtful that stayed with you. Years later, you can still hear those words.
Words shape us. And Jesus invites us to allow His words to become the defining voice in our lives.
But there is a difference between hearing something and actually listening. We all know that. Someone can be talking to us, and we hear every word, but our attention is somewhere else.
Sometimes we approach Scripture that way. We read it. We hear it preached. We recognize familiar passages. But we don’t always stop long enough to consider what Jesus is actually saying to us.
And perhaps that’s a good question for us this week.
Am I simply hearing the words of Jesus, or am I actually listening to Him?
