Kingdom Wisdom Part 9 Devotionals

Day 1: The Voices Shaping Your Life

Devotional

Jesus begins His illustration about wise and foolish builders with a question of hearing: whose words are we receiving? Every day, voices compete for our attention—news, social media, advertisements, friends, coworkers, popular culture, and even our own thoughts. These voices offer definitions of success, security, fear, and significance.

Words have formative power. Encouraging words can remain with us for years, and hurtful words can continue shaping how we see ourselves. Jesus invites us to let His words become the defining voice in our lives. Rather than being shaped unconsciously by the world’s patterns, we can be renewed as we receive the wisdom of Christ.

Bible Verse

Romans 12:2 — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Reflection Question

What voices have been shaping the way you think about success, security, fear, or your own worth?

Quote

“Everyone is listening to someone.”

Prayer

Jesus, help me recognize the voices competing for my attention. Renew my mind and teach me to receive Your words as true. May Your voice shape how I see myself, others, and the world around me. Amen.

Day 2: More Than Hearing Words

Devotional

It is possible to hear someone speak without truly listening. Our ears may receive the words while our thoughts are somewhere else. The same can happen with Scripture. We can read familiar passages, hear sermons, and know Bible stories without pausing to consider what Jesus is personally saying to us.

Martha and Mary show us the difference between distracted activity and attentive relationship. Martha was busy preparing and serving, while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened. Jesus was not condemning service; He was reminding Martha that being with Him, listening to Him, and receiving from Him cannot be replaced by busyness.

Christian activity is not a substitute for Christian relationship. Make room today not merely to hear Jesus’ words, but to attend to Him.

Bible Verse

Luke 10:39 — “She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.”

Reflection Question

Where might busyness be keeping you from slowing down to listen to Jesus?

Quote

“What’s more important is being with Him, listening to Him. It’s receiving from Him.”

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have been busy around You without being attentive to You. Help me choose what is better: to be with You, listen to You, and receive from You. Amen.

Day 3: The Words of Life

Devotional

Jesus is not simply one more voice offering helpful advice. He speaks as King. Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, He has shown what life under the Father’s reign looks like: humility, mercy, forgiveness, prayer, generosity, trust, love, discernment, and knowing Him.

When Peter was asked whether he and the other disciples wanted to leave Jesus, Peter recognized that there was nowhere else to go. Jesus has the words of life. His sheep listen to His voice, are known by Him, and follow Him. Listening to Jesus is not merely gaining information; it is receiving life from the Good Shepherd.

Bible Verse

John 6:68 — “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Reflection Question

What would change in your day if you approached Jesus’ words as words that carry life rather than merely helpful information?

Quote

“His words carry life.”

Prayer

Jesus, You are the Holy One of God, and Your words carry life. Help me hear Your voice above every competing voice and follow You with trust today. Amen.

Day 4: Let Listening Become Practice

Devotional

Jesus says that the wise person hears His words and puts them into practice. Hearing is the beginning, not the destination. James compares hearing God’s Word without responding to looking in a mirror, seeing something that needs attention, and then walking away as though nothing happened.

Putting Jesus’ words into practice is not an attempt to earn God’s approval. It is the ordinary fruit of genuinely listening to Him. As we receive His life, we begin to respond: learning to forgive, bringing our anxieties to the Father, responding differently to difficult people, reordering our priorities, and treating others as we would want to be treated.

Often this formation happens in simple, daily choices. Ask Jesus to show you one next step of obedience today.

Bible Verse

James 1:22 — “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Reflection Question

What is one teaching of Jesus you know but need to put into practice in an ordinary part of your life today?

Key Thought

Genuine listening to Jesus bears fruit in trusting, following, and responding to His words.

Prayer

Father, thank You that I do not obey to earn Your approval. Form my heart as I listen to Jesus. Show me the next right thing, and give me grace to do it. Amen.

Day 5: Build Before the Storm

Devotional

Matthew 7 presents a recurring contrast: two roads, two kinds of trees, two responses to Jesus, and now two builders. Before Jesus speaks about foundations and storms, He asks us to consider whose words we are building upon.

One approach to life says, “I will decide what is true, what is good, and what will give me life.” The other says, “Father, I trust Your wisdom more than my own.” In a world of nearly unlimited information, we can become knowledgeable about Christianity without allowing Jesus to shape the way we live. We can collect information without experiencing formation.

Choose one teaching from the Sermon on the Mount this week. Read it slowly. Think about it. Pray about it. Ask Jesus, “What would it look like for me to live this today?” Then make space for stillness, turn off distractions, and focus on Him.

Bible Verse

Matthew 7:24 — “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Reflection Question

Which teaching from the Sermon on the Mount will you read, pray through, and practice today?

Quote

“Turn the screens off. Focus on Jesus.”

Prayer

Jesus, You are my rock and my Good Shepherd. Quiet the noise around me and within me. Help me build my life on Your words before the storms come, trusting Your wisdom more than my own. Amen.
