What Is Baptism?

If you have recently begun following Jesus, someone may have encouraged you to consider baptism. You might wonder what baptism means, why Christians practice it, and whether it is something you should do.

Perhaps you have seen people baptized during a church service or in the ocean. Maybe you were baptized as a child, or perhaps baptism is completely new to you.

Baptism is a beautiful and meaningful expression of our relationship with Jesus. It is a way of responding to His invitation and publicly identifying ourselves as His followers.

Jesus Invited His Followers to Be Baptized

Baptism has been part of Christian life from the beginning. Jesus Himself was baptized, and He instructed His disciples to baptize those who were becoming His followers.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 28:19

For the first Christians, baptism was a natural expression of responding to Jesus. When people heard the good news, placed their trust in Him, and began following Him, baptism was often one of their first steps.

Baptism is a biblical non-negotiable. Jesus instructed His followers to be baptized. It is not simply a church tradition or an optional religious ceremony. It is part of what Jesus calls us to do as His followers.

That does not mean baptism earns God’s forgiveness or makes us worthy of His love. Salvation is God’s gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus. Baptism is one of the ways we respond to that grace through obedience.

We do not need to understand everything about Christianity before being baptized. But as we learn to follow Jesus, His instruction to be baptized is something we should take seriously.

Baptism Points to the Death and Resurrection of Jesus

One of the most meaningful things about baptism is the story it tells.

When someone is lowered into the water and raised again, it provides a visible picture of being united with Jesus in His death and resurrection.

“We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Romans 6:4

Going beneath the water points to the old life we are leaving behind. Coming out of the water points to the new life we have received through Jesus.

Baptism does not mean we have already become perfect or that every struggle has disappeared. It points to what Jesus has done and the new direction our lives have taken because of Him.

Baptism is a visible expression of the new life we receive through Jesus.

Baptism Is a Response to Grace

Sometimes people wonder whether they must be baptized before God will forgive or accept them.

The Bible teaches that salvation is God’s gift of grace, received through faith in Jesus. We cannot earn that gift through our good works or religious activities.

Baptism is not a way of purchasing forgiveness or convincing God to love us.

Instead, it is a response to what God has already done for us. We are identifying ourselves with Jesus and expressing our desire to follow Him.

This is part of an important pattern in the Christian life: God acts first, and we respond to His grace.

We do not obey Jesus in order to become loved by Him. We learn to obey because we have received His love.

Baptism Is Also a Public Expression of Faith

Although following Jesus begins with a personal response, it is not meant to remain something we keep entirely to ourselves.

Baptism gives us an opportunity to acknowledge before others that we belong to Jesus and are learning to follow Him.

It also gives the church community an opportunity to celebrate, encourage, and pray for someone who is beginning this journey.

You do not need to have an extraordinary story to share. Your decision to trust Jesus and receive His life is meaningful.

And you do not need to be comfortable speaking in front of a large group. A church leader can help you understand what participation will involve.

Baptism Creates a Powerful Memory

There is another wonderful reason to consider baptism. It can become a powerful memory in your journey with Jesus.

Years from now, you may remember the day you went into the water and publicly identified yourself as a follower of Jesus.

You may remember the people who celebrated with you, the prayers that were offered, and the joy of taking that step.

That memory can become an encouragement during difficult seasons. When you face doubts, struggles, or disappointments, you can look back and remember that you placed your trust in Jesus and publicly expressed your desire to follow Him.

If you were baptized when you were very young and have no memory of it, that may be something worth considering as you think about baptism today.

It does not mean that your earlier baptism was meaningless. Christian traditions understand baptism differently, and those differences deserve respect.

But having a personal memory of publicly identifying yourself with Jesus can be a meaningful gift.

Baptism is not only a moment of obedience. It can also become a lasting reminder of the new life you have received through Jesus.

What Happens During Baptism?

At Keys Vineyard, we practice baptism by immersion. This means a person is gently lowered into the water and then raised again.

The action provides a simple and powerful picture of death, burial, and resurrection with Jesus.

Before being baptized, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and understand what baptism means.

During the baptism, a church leader will help you through the process. It is usually brief, and it is a time of joy and celebration.

If you have concerns about being in water, physical limitations, or anything else, you can talk with a church leader about your situation.

The goal is not to create a performance. It is to celebrate your response to Jesus.

What If I Was Baptized Before?

Some people were baptized as infants or children in another Christian tradition. Others were baptized at a time when they did not fully understand what it meant to follow Jesus.

Christian churches have different understandings and practices concerning baptism.

At Keys Vineyard, we encourage people who have personally placed their trust in Jesus to consider baptism as an expression of that faith.

One question worth considering is whether you have a personal memory of being baptized as a follower of Jesus.

If you were baptized as an infant or when you were very young, you may not remember that experience.

Having a meaningful memory of publicly expressing your faith can be a wonderful part of your journey with Jesus.

That does not automatically mean you need to be baptized again. It is something worth discussing thoughtfully with a pastor or church leader.

We would welcome a conversation about your previous experience, your questions, and what might be an appropriate next step.

You Do Not Have to Have Everything Figured Out

Sometimes new believers hesitate to be baptized because they feel they are not ready.

Perhaps you still have questions about the Bible, prayer, or the Christian life.

Maybe you are aware of areas in your life that still need to change.

Baptism is not a graduation ceremony for people who have mastered following Jesus.

It is an expression of trust in the One who has welcomed us into His life.

If you are trusting Jesus and want to follow Him, baptism is an important step of obedience worth taking.

Consider Your Next Step

Take a few moments to reflect on what baptism means. Have you personally placed your trust in Jesus? Have you been baptized before? Do you have a memory of that experience?

If you have not been baptized since beginning to follow Jesus, consider talking with a pastor or church leader about taking that step.

And if you were baptized when you were very young, consider having a conversation about what baptism might mean for you today.

You might pray:

“Jesus, thank You for the new life You have given me. Help me understand what it means to follow You and respond to Your grace. Give me wisdom and courage as I consider baptism and the next step You are inviting me to take.”
