You Said Yes to Jesus. What Happens Next?

Saying yes to Jesus is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new life of learning to trust Him, follow Him, receive His grace, and participate in His Kingdom. You do not need to understand everything immediately. Following Jesus happens one faithful step at a time.

Start With Jesus

Christianity can feel complicated when everything is new.

There are sixty-six books in the Bible. Churches use unfamiliar words. Christians sometimes have different opinions. There are ministries, groups, practices, and opportunities everywhere.

Begin simply.

Jesus invited His first disciples with two words: “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19).

Your first responsibility is not to figure out everything. It is to begin learning to live with Jesus.

Start Reading Scripture

The Bible helps us discover God’s story and learn the character and ways of Jesus.

A Gospel such as Mark or John is a good place for a new believer to begin.

Read a small section. Ask: What does this show me about Jesus? What do I learn about God? Is there something here I need to trust or practice?

The free Bible courses available through Keys Vineyard can also help when you are ready to understand Scripture more deeply.

Talk With God

Prayer does not require special vocabulary.

Talk with the Father honestly.

Thank Him. Ask for help. Confess when you fail. Pray for people you love. Sit quietly sometimes.

Jesus gave His disciples a simple pattern for prayer in Matthew 6:9–13.

Prayer is not about impressing God. It is part of learning to live in relationship with Him.

Don’t Try to Follow Jesus Alone

From the beginning, Christians followed Jesus together.

Acts 2:42 describes believers learning, eating, praying, and sharing life with one another.

You need other Christians—not because Christians are perfect, but because we need encouragement, wisdom, prayer, friendship, and sometimes correction.

Keys Vineyard provides opportunities to connect through the life and ministries of the church.

Develop Simple Rhythms

Don’t try to add twenty new religious activities to your life this week.

Begin with sustainable rhythms.

Read some Scripture. Pray. Gather with other believers. Worship. Learn generosity. Serve someone.

Resources from Christian Practices can help you explore rhythms of prayer, Scripture, attentiveness, and everyday life with God.

Expect Questions

Faith does not mean never having questions.

You will encounter passages you don’t understand. You may hear Christians disagree. Life experiences may raise difficult questions.

Ask.

Talk with mature believers. Study Scripture. Give yourself permission to keep learning.

A growing faith does not need to be afraid of an honest question.

Find a Place to Serve

You do not have to wait until you consider yourself spiritually mature before you can help someone.

Serve in ways appropriate to where you are.

Welcome someone. Help with a practical need. Encourage another person. Participate in outreach. Pray for someone.

Serving reminds us that following Jesus turns our attention outward.

Keep Receiving Grace

You are going to make mistakes.

Every Christian does.

The answer is not pretending you didn’t fail or deciding you are no longer worthy to follow Jesus.

Return to Him.

First John 1:9 reminds us that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us when we confess our sins.

Growth includes learning to begin again.

Take Your Next Step

You don’t need to know where you will be spiritually five years from now.

What is your next faithful step?

Read Scripture today. Pray. Come to church. Join someone for coffee. Ask a question. Serve. Forgive. Receive grace.
